Reimagining Parking in Dense Urban Environments

Description

Less land for parking. More room for everything else. From city blocks to private homes. Every project comes back to the same question: where do the cars go?

On a city site, the answer is usually ramps, basement levels and parking bays that take up land meant for homes, shops and public space. On a residential site, it's a garage that takes the garden, the pool or the view.

What if parking needed only a fraction of that space?

Join Michael Rohwer, Managing Director of ATTPS, for an evening on how automated and semi-automated parking systems are giving land back, from dense urban developments to private homes. Drawing on built projects from cities around the world, the session shows what becomes possible when parking stops dictating the design:

- more homes on the same site

- more green and public space

- buildings shaped around people rather than parking bays

The evening is for architects, planners, urban designers, developers and engineers.

19^th Green Building Convention ’26 – The Green Revolution – GBC SA

Description

Sumayya Vally: Closing address titled Bridging Worlds: Architecture as Repair, Ritual and Belonging.

African building design: Luyanda Mpahlwa and Thomas Chapman of Local Studio explore high-tech solutions, rammed earth, shading and passive design.

Housing and resilience: Wandile Mthiyane shares his 1,600 km walk from Durban to Cape Town and his work on dignified, climate-resilient homes.

AI and architectural practice: Dr Sechaba Maape of Afreetekture joins a panel on professional liability, learning and the value of human judgement.

Urban renewal and practical design: Adam Levy discusses Braamfontein regeneration. Other sessions cover water-sensitive cities, energy modelling and presentations by architectural studios.

Registration is R9,000 for GBCSA members and R10,000 for non-members. It includes plenaries, workshops and breakaway sessions, the Revolution Stage, exhibition and SMME Village, daily lunch and refreshments, and the Welcome Cocktail and Trashion Show.
