CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) NOTIFICATION

1. ANNUAL NOTIFICATION AND REMINDER TO SACAP REGISTERED PROFESSIONALS

The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) hereby reminds all Registered Professionals of their ongoing responsibility to comply with the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as outlined in Section 18(1)(a) and (c) of the Architectural Profession Act, No. 44 of 2000 (“the Act”).

2.    CPD REQUIREMENTS

All Registered Professionals are required to actively accumulate CPD points throughout the year and submit these claims via their online profile at: https://www.sacapsa.com.

Key requirements include:

2.1.     A minimum of 3 CPD points must be obtained each calendar year;

2.2.    At least one (1) of the three (3) points must fall within Category 1: Developmental Activities; and

2.3.   Over a five-year CPD cycle, a total of 25 CPD points must be accumulated, of which a minimum of 5 points must be from Category 1

Professionals approaching the end of their five-year CPD cycle are reminded to submit any outstanding CPD claims by December 31 of the final year of their cycle. For example, if your registration renewal date is 1 January 2025, all CPD points must be claimed no later than 31 December 2024. Please ensure that all Category 1 CPD claims are accompanied by the relevant certificate of attendance, which must indicate the SACAP competency addressed during the activity

3.    DEREGISTRATION AND CPD PENALTIES

In instances where registration has lapsed due to non-payment of annual fees (in accordance with section 20(1)(a)(iii) of the Act), the following applies:

3.1.   The individual must first apply for re-registration and may not practice until registration has been reinstated;

3.2.     Upon re-registration, a penalty of two (2) additional CPD points from Category 1 must be earned within 12 months; and

3.3   These points are in addition to the standard annual CPD requirements. This means the total CPD requirement for the five-year cycle becomes 27 points, of which 7 must be from Category 1.

4.    REGISTERED PROFESSIONALS PRACTICING ABROAD

For professionals residing and practicing outside of South Africa:

4.1.        SACAP may recognise compliance with an international CPD system, provided documentary evidence is submitted;

4.2.       This evidence may include a certification from the relevant accrediting authority in the foreign jurisdiction; and

4.3.        CPD points obtained abroad will be converted to the South African system (e.g., 10 hours of relevant activity equates to 1 CPD point in Category 1).

5.    NON-COMPLIANCE AND DISCIPLINARY CONSEQUENCES

Failure to meet CPD obligations may result in disciplinary action:

5.1.        Non-compliance with CPD requirements constitutes improper conduct under Rule 2.7 of the Code of Conduct;

5.2.         Disciplinary proceedings will follow the relevant sections of the Act (Sections 27–33); and

5.3.       A Registered Professional found guilty may be fined in accordance with Section 32(3)(ii) of the Act. The current fine for such an offence is R20,000, in line with the Adjustment of Fines Act, 1991 (Act No. 101 of 1991), and related regulations.

We encourage all Registered Professionals to remain compliant and actively engaged in continuous professional development.
