Clarification on the Requirement for Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance
The South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) wishes to provide clarity regarding the requirement for Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance as it relates to registered persons. Please be advised that PI insurance is not a prerequisite for the renewal of registration with SACAP. However, it is a mandatory requirement when a registered person undertakes any architectural work on behalf of a client, in accordance with Rule 4.1 of the Code of Conduct for Registered Persons.
Rule 4.1 of the Code of Conduct stipulates that a registered person must ensure that, prior to commencing any professional work, a written agreement is entered into with the client. Among other essential elements, this agreement must confirm that the registered person has secured adequate and appropriate Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance. This insurance serves to protect both the client and the registered professional against potential professional risks that may arise during the execution of architectural services.
Kind Regards,
SACAP
SACAP
therefore reminds all registered persons to maintain valid and sufficient PI
insurance cover whenever engaged in professional practice. Doing so not only
ensures compliance with the Code of Conduct but also upholds the highest
standards of professional integrity, accountability, and public protection
within the architectural profession.
