Frequently Asked Questions.

There are no ‘essential subjects’ required for you to study Architecture. However most universities insist that you have a pass in Mathematics.  Art can be an advantage, as can Engineering, Graphics and Design (EGD). Physics can also be informative.

There are various courses that a person can take in order to prepare for a career in the architectural profession. These include: a Higher Certificate in Architecture, a Diploma in Architecture, a Bachelor of Architecture (NQF 7) or an Advanced Diploma in Architecture. Should you wish to study towards registration as a Professional Architect, you will then need to proceed to a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons) and a Master of Architecture degree.

SACAP has 11 accredited Architectural Learning Sites (ALSs) / Universities where a student can pursue a career in the architectural profession.

These universities are;

·         University of Cape Town (UCT)

·         Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)

·         Nelson Mandela University (NMU)

·         University of Pretoria (UP)

·         Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)

·         University of Johannesburg (UJ)

·         University of Witwatersrand (WITS)

·         University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)

·         Durban University of Technology (DUT)

·         University of the Free State (UFS)

Note: Applicants must first understand the SACAP registration category that they aspire to achieve and then check that their ALS of choice offers courses that support their aim.

SACAP is aware of this problem and is in communication with these institutions to try and       assist them in getting their programmes accredited, so that their students can register with SACAP.
