CPD course : Professional Liability and Professional Indemnity in the Architectural Profession : Online

Title of CPD course

Professional Liability and Professional Indemnity in the Architectural Profession

Presenters

Adv. Chris Roos (Construction Law Advocate)

Charle Halgryn (Insurance Expert)

Sebastian van Greunen and Haydn Ellis (Professional Architects)

Course information (Content/Overview)

Concerned about possible disputes with clients and contractors? Worried your PI insurance provides adequate cover and is in line with risk trends in the industry?

Across the world, risks in the architectural profession have increased.  SA stats are not available, but the average cost of professional indemnity insurance in the UK has grown from 1.2% of practice costs to 3%, while exclusions have increased.  In South Africa:

“Claims… have increased dramatically, along with a 350% surge in claims relating to construction risks…. Underwriters are taking a hard line, scrutinising the due diligence and verification processes of insured parties” Malcolm Padayachee, Business Head of PI and Liability, SHA Risk Specialists. From: Professional Indemnity Risks in SA are Skyrocketing.

This online webinar series asks you to complete a brief survey on your liability and indemnity concerns, as well as your risk management practices.  A report thematising the main concerns will be shared before the webinars. Speakers will focus their presentations on questions raised. Online chat rooms and topic threads allow you to engage with presenters and your fellow professionals before, during and after webinars. Support materials include a set of practice notes on relevant legal questions; analyses of trends in coverage and exclusions; and sample risk management resources.

The three webinars will deal respectively with the following topics:

      ·  Current and emerging liabilities in architecture. Survey results relating to adjudication, arbitration and litigation faced by participants.  Core legal issues and recent arbitration/court judgements.  Adv Chris Roos (Chris Roos and Associates, a multidisciplinary boutique law firm specialising exclusively in engineering and construction law).

      ·  PI insurance and exclusions. Survey results on PI issues and questions.  Factors driving increased premiums and cover restrictions in PI insurance for architects. Implications for architectural professionals. Charle Halgryn (InsureTech Trailblazer, PluCot).

     ·   Strategies for managing risks.  Survey results on risk management practices and concerns. Risk management at company level, managing risk collaboratively with insurers, exploring industry issues.  Sebastian van Greunen and Haydn Ellis, Professional Architects.
