SACAP and Ekurhuleni Municipality forge a path forward for building plan reforms and Sustainable Human Settlements
On 10 September 2024, the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) convened a meeting with the Ekurhuleni Office of the Executive Mayor, represented by MMC Ms. Nomadlozi Nkosi on behalf of the City Mayor. The discussions were notably constructive, addressing critical challenges faced by architectural professionals in the building plan submission process and the involvement of architectural professionals in human settlement planning.
SACAP President Mr. Charles Nduku emphasized the urgent need for enhanced collaboration to achieve housing policy objectives and foster the development of Sustainable Human Settlements. It was agreed that a follow-up meeting involving SACAP, Ekurhuleni Office of the Executive Mayor, and the MEC for Human Settlements was necessary.
This meeting will explore how architectural expertise can contribute to creating functional, safe, and aesthetically pleasing human settlements. Key areas of focus will include developing low-cost housing that is resilient to extreme weather, promotes energy efficiency, and integrates renewable energy and high-performance materials.
SACAP is
dedicated to working closely with the Ekurhuleni Office of the Executive Mayor,
and the Human Settlements Department to overcome these challenges and advance
sustainable development. Both Mr. Nduku and Ms. Nkozi expressed their
enthusiasm for continuing this collaborative effort to meet the shared housing
policy.
