The Role Overview

A Professional Architect is a registered professional responsible for leading the design and execution of architectural projects. This role involves creating innovative and functional designs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and managing project delivery from inception to completion. The architect collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions that are aesthetically appealing, sustainable, and aligned with client expectations.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Architectural Design

·       Lead the conceptualization, development, and delivery of architectural designs for complex building projects.

·       Create innovative, functional, and aesthetically pleasing solutions while addressing technical, social, and environmental challenges.

·       Conduct thorough site analyses to inform design strategies and ensure contextual and environmental responsiveness.

·       Present design concepts and proposals to clients, stakeholders, and approval authorities through detailed drawings, models, and presentations.

 

Construction Documentation

·       Prepare detailed working drawings, technical specifications, and other documentation for construction purposes.

·       Ensure all documentation complies with National Building Regulations (NBR), SANS standards, and local authority requirements.

·       Oversee the integration of structural, mechanical, and electrical systems into architectural designs.

·       Conduct quality assurance reviews of drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy and feasibility.

 

Project Management

·       Manage all phases of architectural projects, from initial concept to final handover.

·       Develop project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation plans to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.

·       Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, and suppliers to coordinate efforts and resolve project challenges.

·       Monitor construction progress to ensure adherence to design intent, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

 

Environmental and Urban Sensitivity

·       Integrate sustainable and ecologically responsible principles into all designs.

·       Evaluate and address urban and contextual factors, ensuring harmony with existing landscapes and infrastructure.

·       Champion innovative design solutions that promote environmental conservation and community well-being.

 

Building Technology and Services

·       Research and apply advanced construction methods, materials, and technologies.

·       Oversee the integration of building services (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems) into cohesive architectural solutions.

·       Develop cost-effective, climate-responsive construction details aligned with project objectives.

 

Legal and Ethical Practice

·       Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory frameworks, including SACAP’s Identification of Work (IDoW) policy.

·       Administer contracts effectively, addressing disputes, variations, and claims in a professional manner.

·       Uphold ethical standards and act as a steward for the architectural profession.

 

Leadership and Mentorship

·       Provide leadership to project teams, ensuring effective collaboration and communication.

·       Mentor and guide junior professionals, including candidate architectural technologists and architects, in their professional development.

·       Foster a culture of creativity, innovation, and continuous learning within the practice.

 

Business and Office Management

·       Contribute to the strategic planning and growth of the architectural practice.

·       Manage project finances, including cost estimation, budgeting, and invoicing.

·       Develop and implement marketing strategies to attract new clients and opportunities.

Required Competencies

·       Expertise in architectural design, theory, and history.

·       Proficiency in preparing and managing construction documentation for complex projects.

·       Advanced knowledge of urban design, environmental sustainability, and building technologies.

·       Strong project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.

·       Familiarity with legal frameworks, contracts, and regulatory compliance in architecture.

·       Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Educational Qualifications

·       Master’s Degree in Architecture (Professional) or equivalent SACAP-accredited qualification at NQF Level 9.

·       Registered as a Professional Architect (PrArch) with SACAP.
