The Role Overview
A Candidate Professional Architect (CPA) contributes to
architectural projects under the guidance of a registered professional
architect while completing the candidacy requirements set by the South African
Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). This role bridges theoretical
knowledge and practical application, preparing the candidate for professional
registration.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Architectural Design
· Create
innovative design concepts for complex building projects, considering
aesthetic, technical, functional, and cultural aspects.
· Conduct
site analyses to understand environmental, social, and contextual factors
influencing design.
· Prepare
comprehensive design proposals, including sketches, 3D models, and detailed
presentations for client review.
· Address
design challenges through problem-solving and critical thinking, ensuring
compliance with regulatory standards and project briefs.
Construction Documentation
·
Develop detailed construction
drawings and specifications for multi-story or complex building projects.
·
Ensure all documentation meets
National Building Regulations (NBR), SANS standards, and local authority
approval requirements.

Collaborate with structural,
mechanical, and electrical consultants to integrate building systems into
cohesive designs.
Environmental and Urban Sensitivity
·
Incorporate principles of sustainable
and ecologically responsive design.
·
Analyse and integrate urban design
considerations into projects, ensuring harmony with existing infrastructure and
communities.
·
Evaluate landscapes and recommend
environmentally conscious design solutions.
Building Technology and Services
·
Research and specify advanced
materials, construction methods, and building technologies suitable for complex
architectural projects.
·
Coordinate the integration of
building services, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and fire
protection, into architectural designs.
·
Develop climate-responsive and
cost-effective construction details that align with the project concept.
Legal and Ethical Practice
·
Adhere to SACAP’s Identification of
Work (IDoW) policy, building codes, and legal frameworks governing
architectural projects.
·
Understand and apply various forms of
building contracts, ensuring compliance and ethical practice throughout project
phases.
·
Stay informed about local and
international architectural regulations and trends.
Computer Applications
·
Utilize advanced architectural
software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modelling, and rendering tools) for design and
documentation.
·
Produce high-quality digital
presentations for clients and stakeholders.
·
Manage project databases and
implement digital workflows for efficient documentation and communication.
Project Coordination
·
Participate in all stages of the
architectural process, from concept development to project handover.
·
Collaborate with multidisciplinary
teams, including engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, and planners, to
deliver integrated solutions.
·
Assist in managing project timelines,
budgets, and deliverables while maintaining high-quality standards.
Professional Development
·
Maintain a detailed logbook of
professional experience as required by SACAP.
·
Attend training, seminars, and
mentorship programs to enhance skills and meet professional exam requirements.
·
Engage in continuous learning to stay
updated on industry advancements, design trends, and innovative practices.
Required Competencies

Advanced understanding of
architectural design principles, theory, and history.

Proficiency in preparing construction
documentation for complex projects.
·
Knowledge of urban design,
environmental sustainability, and building technologies.

Familiarity with legal frameworks,
contracts, and ethical practices in architecture.

analytical skills.
Educational Qualifications
·
Master’s degree in architecture
(Professional) or equivalent SACAP-accredited qualification at NQF Level 9.
·
Enrolment in a SACAP-recognized
candidacy program leading to professional registration.
