The Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at the University of Johannesburg is Africa’s youngest and most dynamic school or architecture. Following the successful implementation of the world-renowned Unit System method of teaching in the professional programme in 2015, we are now seeking to make a new appointment at the Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor* level, to commence in February 2019.

We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified and energetic applicant to fulfil the role of Programme Leader in History & Theory, responsible for shaping, managing and delivering a world-class History & Theory course. In the first year of your appointment, the emphasis will be on the design and implementation of the History & Theory Dissertation (HTD) course within the School’s main programme, the professional M Arch. Thereafter, the emphasis will shift from the day-to-day management and oversight of the M Arch (Prof) programme to developing a unique post-professional

MA in Critical Theory and/or Contemporary History & Theory, tailored specifically to the African and global South contexts.

You will have demonstrable expertise in the area of nineteenth and twentieth century architectural history, with knowledge of urbanism and urban history. Proficiency in the history of architectural theory and historiography, including familiarity with major research paradigms in the field is essential. You will also have a proven track record in teaching and research, as well as excellent managerial and leadership skills. You will be able to share your vision for contributing to a programme that brings together the different strengths already present in the school, whilst developing new areas of research that are both locally and globally relevant. In addition, you will be able to meaningfully contribute to the GSA’s new cross-disciplinary think-tank, Transformative Pedagogies, an on-going design and research initiative tasked with finding innovative and intellectually rigorous approaches to the transformation of architectural canon and pedagogy in a developing world context.

You will share the responsibility of developing a robust and challenging programme with two assistants reporting to you for mentorship and guidance as we seek to build a new generation of African architectural scholars. Publication, travel and exhibition opportunities are highly encouraged and supported through discussion and negotiation with the Head of School.

You will be expected to:

                Teach and assess architectural history and theory at the Master’s level;

                Contribute actively to research in your specialist field related to architectural history & theory and/or urbanism and urban theory

                Publish research, including the work of your students, using appropriate channels (peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations) as well as exhibitions, new forms of media and speaking engagements;

                Share in the administration and management of the GSA and the wider Faculty;

                Participate in official meetings of the GSA and Faculty;

                Cultivate an active presence as a public intellectual;

                Develop key national and international links and collaborative opportunities;

                Actively contribute to the development and growth of the GSA.

Minimum Requirements:

                A Master’s degree in Architecture (Senior Lecturer level) or PhD in Architecture (or related disciplines)

( Associate Professor level);

                An in-depth and current knowledge of architectural design with a particular emphasis on history and theory;

                A demonstrable research interest and proven research ability (articles, exhibitions, books);

                A record of collegiality, collaboration and initiative;

                Experience of teaching/reviewing at tertiary level;

                An international profile with a demonstrable network and collaboration potential.
