Designing is a visual art yet we never actually see what we are designing until it's made.

Similar to colouring-in books, the lines on designers' drawings outline surfaces. The drawings effectively flatten the world into simplified outlines. 3D is reduced to 1D on 2D.

The drawings omit everything between the lines, that is, the nature of the surfaces, the very thing we are designing and see in the world we inhabit - the coloured areas in the colouring-in books. With design drawings the main visual content is supplied by our imagination, since the drawings lack this in relation to the objects they represent.

These abstract line diagrams are assumed to be the means to the end, but become the end itself when objects, buildings and urban environments are made in their image. Most timber frame houses are constructed from bill board size elevations joined together. Worldwide, rectangles on flat paper become blocks of flats. This method of designing originates from and perpetuates making a flat and right-angled world.  It's so prevalent it's difficult to imagine something different as the norm.

With the exception of boxer shorts..., cars, clothes, couches and carnations are not box like. The moment we integrate flat and curved surfaces into something more dynamic our conventional method of designing handcuffs our creativity, in more ways than expected.

We need to review our method of designing. This means shifting from designing with outlines only to outlines and actual surfaces, from flat screens only to flat screens and actual 3D. When the dimension we design in is the same as the design itself, we can breathe a quality of immediacy and aliveness into our creativity. The results are surprisingly unique and fresh.

This course addresses this issue and many more... in practical, novel, enjoyable and readily accessible ways.
