SACAP Campaign – Architecture as a career and studying at accredited Architectural Learning sites

SACAP is in the process of developing a public awareness campaign that will promote "Architecture as a Career" and the importance of studying at SACAP accredited learning sites (ALS's).

The campaign is aimed at educating the youth sector and, Grades 8 - 12 learners at high schools, as well as encouraging school-leaving persons intending to pursue architecture as a career, to enrol at Accredited Learning Sites, as opposed to non-validated Learning Sites.

The disadvantage of studying a non accredited programme is that graduates are not able to register immediately as Candidates. They will be required to obtain years of experience and present a portfolio for evaluation before they can be considered.

The following is a list of Accredited Programmes in the Architectural Learning Sites (ALS):

National Certificate of Architectural Draughting

Inscape Design College
Inscape is currently the only SACAP validated Private Institution.
Below is the interview between SACAP and Rick Edmonds, Principal of Inscape Design College on the SACAP validation of Inscape.

An overview of Inscape validation by SACAP
For Inscape Design College, SACAP validation was a natural progression. The 30-year old private college has as one of its non-negotiable principles "We facilitate learning that enables students to achieve success in their careers."  This means that they prepare their students for either the world of work or for higher education, whichever they choose.

Inscape's Architectural Draughting course has been geared to meet the needs of the architectural profession since it was introduced in 1985.  As their graduates can testify, SACAP validation confirms that the course not only enables them to ‘hit the ground running' in a practice, but it now also assists in admission into university.

What is the advantage  for Inscape to be validated by SACAP
Through its campuses in Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban and Johannesburg, Inscape offers excellent Architectural education in the major centres.  Its sister college, Olearn, now offers the same high standard course nationwide through distance education.

For their students, the advantage is that they are not required to show 3 years of experience after qualification. They can register as Candidate draughtspersons immediately after obtaining their qualifications. SACAP validation also means that Inscape must remain committed to upholding the standards that SACAP has recognised.

Advice to other non-validated private learning sites
In the interests of improving education in South Africa, and by so doing, increasing rewarding employment, Inscape recommends that all institutions offering built environment programmes apply to SACAP for validation.
