Hidden Talent Discovered
Losing everything is how this inspiring story begins. Joseph Kalango, a young man from the DRC tragically lost his entire family in the war. He took what he could carry and proceeded to walk all the way to South Africa. He found himself in Cape Town and started earning a meagre living from guarding cars in a parking lot.
One of the businesses using the parking lot is an architectural practice, and every day Joseph admired the impressive models on display. Finding inspiration in what he saw, he used whatever materials he could get his hands on, and started constructing a model. Once he had completed his masterpiece, he plucked up the courage and took it into the practice to show the owners. They were so impressed that they employed him to work on their models, and later offered him a loan to study at university. He has proved to be a star student and is currently in his second year completing a Diploma in Architectural Technology.
Joseph Kalango is a wonderful success story and SACAP is proud to be making a contribution to his very bright future in the architectural profession. We look forward to seeing many more talented people enter the profession and reach their full potential.
