Course information (Content/Overview)

Objectives;

To understand the consequences of solar exposure, solar irradiation, micro climate, overheating and under heating.

This knowledge would assist the attendee in achieving passive building by optimally utilising the free energy from the sun to make the building comfortable and how to achieve compliance with the NBR & SANS 204

 

Course content;

· Why is this design philosophy necessary?

· Microclimate (site specific).

· Solar irradiation and its effects.

· Psychometric chart / data.

· Combining Psychometric data with the microclimatic data to determine heating and cooling periods.

· Shading element types.

· Solar geometry.

· Combining shading elements and solar geometry to provide shadow casting.

· Sun path diagrams

· Shadow angle protractor.

· Using sun path diagrams and shadow angle protractors to achieve the best dimensions for the shading elements, creating a balance between natural heating and cooling.

· Using this design methodology to achieve compliance with the National Building Regulations and standards Act 103 of 1977, SANS 10400 XA and SANS 204.

 

Delegates would receive;

· Easy to use design methods that can be incorporated at design stage that would help create passive buildings.

· Access to sun path diagrams and shadow angle protractors.

· Access to selected microclimate data.

· Psychometric chart.
