Title of CPD course

BUILDING DESIGN FOR THE CLIMATE (The philosophy of natural heating & cooling of buildings)

Presenter

Videshkumar Boodu

Course information (Content/Overview)

Objectives;

To understand the consequences of solar exposure, solar irradiation, micro climate, overheating and under heating.

The attendee would be able to use this knowledge to design passive buildings using the available natural resources.

Course content;

· Why is this design philosophy necessary?

· Microclimate (site specific).

· Solar irradiation and its effects.

· Psychometric chart / data.

· Combining Psychometric data with the microclimatic data to determine heating and cooling periods.

· Shading element types.

· Solar geometry.

· Combining shading elements and solar geometry to provide shadow casting.

· Sun path diagrams

· Shadow angle protractor.

· Using sun path diagrams and shadow angle protractors to achieve the best dimensions for the shading elements, creating a balance between natural heating and cooling.

· Using this design methodology to achieve compliance with the National Building Regulations and standards Act 103 of 1977, SANS 10400 XA and SANS 204.

Delegates would receive;

· Easy to use design methods that can be incorporated at design stage that would help create passive buildings.

· Access to sun path diagrams and shadow angle protractors.

· Access to selected microclimate data.

· Psychometric chart.

Methods to create sun path diagrams and shadow angle protractors for specific latitudes
